SINGLE-PARENTS FAMILIES 2011

An endless battle…this is maybe what best defines the lives of the mothers we assist. A battle for facing material and financial difficulties, tiredness and emotional needs both of them and of their children. This is why during this period we tried to come and support this mothers.

In every first Friday of the month we met the mothers in the support group. In April the theme we discussed was the cognitive, emotional and spiritual development of the children. We also approached the nature vs. nurture question in our discussion. We enjoyed having a psychiatrist as a guest so the mother could receive answers based on medical matters to their questions. In this same month, April, the mothers happily received food aid and the visit of some sponsors from Germany.

In May we talked about adolescent child in our support group.  Some of our mother’s children are entering  this phase , a phase with many changes,  which sometimes make the mother feel overwhelmed knowing not what else to do. Thus we discussed the problems they face, raising awareness of the changes that emerge in this period and talking about their children’s needs.

In June the mothers attended a meeting with other women in which they could listen to other mother’s experiences of raising their children. Furthermore, they had the opportunity to hear once again about the importance of supporting their children, not only materially but more important emotionally and spiritually.

During these three months we also had individual sessions for counseling, occasion on which the mothers could freely talk about ther frets, and identifiy the main thoughts that triggered specific behaviors and feelings. Solutions were also framed.

The children of these mothers enjoyed some recreational and educational activities specifically designed for them, and in june, since it was Children’s Day they enjoyed an outing in the park with our volunteers.

These are also the months when we began organizing a 3 days trip for July with the mothers and their children. We found the chalet, and are on our way to fixing the other details.
